Fall Citizen Science Programming

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all education programming will take place virtually this season.

From October – December 2020, GCC is offering a 45-60 minute virtual citizen science field trip for students in grades 5-12 within the Gowanus Watershed area. (see map here) Teachers will receive a free, NYS standards-aligned citizen science curriculum.

Students will investigate Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) and how it pollutes NYC waterways through human impact and city infrastructure design. They will explore citizen science data and some solutions we can all work on for cleaner, healthier NYC waterways. After the trip, students can conduct a citizen science investigation using their own data.

Eligible teachers within the Gowanus Watershed area (map here) are eligible for one free virtual trip from October – December, 2020. Email Jordan at education@gowanuscanalconservancy.org for questions and to schedule a trip. Teachers outside of the Watershed area can still request the curriculum and additional resource material.
